My Story

On Monday, May 31, 2010, I embarked on a mission to lose weight and to get into the best shape of my life for my wedding. For a long time that mission was a success until life started getting stressful and food became a way to cope with that stress. To make a long story short, the mission fell short before my wedding day was here. And to make things even worse, I stopped eating healthy, exercising, and blogging for over two years. I now have a very beautiful wife and baby boy but my health is still crap. So to turn things around, I am brining back "The Heavy Man" and the "Mission to Healthy."

Day #6

Today I faced my biggest struggle since starting my mission.  That struggle was staying home from the office today. I know it sounds weird catorizing staying home as a struggle, but at least when I am in the office I have work to do, co-workers distracting me and there really is no time at all to think about food. However, I did impressive myself by not giving in to any temptations.  I ate healthy the entire day and did not think of straying off the path at all. I can tell you this my friends eating healthier is starting to get a little easier.

My New Reebok ZigZags
It was also Day #2 for using my new shoes, the Reebok ZigZags. I can honestly say that these are the best pair of workout shoes I have ever purchased.  Usually in the past when I attempted to start working out again my legs would hurt, my kness would be in pain, and my feet would have a pins and needles feeling.  Today I used an elliptical machine for the first time in months and I had no problems at all.  I would defenitly recommend for everyone to purchase a pair of Reebok ZigZags if you are serious about working out with little to no pain in your legs.

I would also like to take this time to mentioned that I went to the gym for the first time in about 5 months. I had joined Anytime Fitness a while ago with the hope of getting back into an exercise routine.  I recommend Anytime Fitness or any 24 hour gym to anyone who has crazy work hours like myself and has no time to workout before normal gyms close. Anytime Fitness is open 24 hours and the best part is that you can use your key card membership to get into any Anytime Fitness Gym accross the counrty.

With that being said let's get to the details of the day:

Meals of the Day

Breakfast  - I slept in today to for the first time in a while.  I had a nutrition breakfast bar this morning and water.
Lunch - I had a footlong turkey sub on whole wheat bread with a bag of Lays Baked Potato Chips and two bottles of water. All from Subway.
Dinner - I liked it so much that I had another footlong turkey sub on whole wheat bread with apple slices and two bottles of water from Subway.

I also had two nutrition bars during the day with plenty of water and all of my vitamins that I purchased from GNC.

Exercise

I stepped it up today, as I mentioned before, and went to the gym. I used an elliptical machine for 30 mins.  I will do the same tomorrow as well as come up with my new workout plan for next week.

Day #5

It is Day #5 already and it feels like I just started my mission yesterday.

I was attempting to gain some followers today on my Facebook Fan Page (The Heavy Man) and my Twitter Account (www.Twitter.com/TheHeavyMan) when I was received an instant message from a friend of mine that I haven't seen or spoken to since high school. He was asking how I was doing and congratulated me on becoming engaged. The conversation went on for at least five minutes. Midway through our conversation he said something to me that I will never forget for as long as I live. He said, "I visited your blog site and I think it is great what you are doing." Yes!!!!!!!! That is exactly why I started this blog and the mission. I could go on doing this happily for the rest of my life without one more person even mentioning my blog to me ever again. Anyway, my friend then went on to say how he had gained weight as well and was attempting to loose it. He agreed to follow my blog and to comment and give advice to help other people along the way as well.

After last night's walk my legs, knees, and feet were feeling a little soar this morning. So I decided to purchase a new pair of workout shoes to hopefully ease the pain. I went to the store and ended up buying the new Reebok Zigzags. The sole of the shoe has what is called zigzag technology. This new technology is designed to lessen the pain on major muscles in your legs by 20%. Let me tell you, they have to be the most comfortable shoes I have ever worn. I just got home from tonight's walk about a half an hour ago and so far my legs are feeling pretty good. Koodos to you Reebok, keep up the great work!!

With that being said let's get to the details of the day:

Meals of the Day

Breakfast - Scrambled egg whites on whole wheat bread with fresh fruit and a bottle of water.
Lunch - I liked it so much last night that I had to have it again...... The Chicken BLT Salad from Wendy's with Fat Free French Dressing and a bottle of water
Dinner - I got out of work really late tonight and I didn't want to eat to late so I decided to go back to Wendy's and pick up another Salad.

I promise I will switch up the meals starting tomorrow. I also plan on sitting down this weekend to plan out next week's meals and food shop accordingly.

Exercise

I went for another 30 min walk tonight with my Fiancee and boy did a sweat up a storm in the heat. I know I am getting a good workout when I sweat. I have been conducting some research over the last five days and I am going to also sit down this weekend and put together an exercise plan for next week and yes I will attempt yet again to wake up at 7am to start my cardio workout.

Day #4

I am sweating, my legs are soar, my feet hurt, and I couldn't be more proud of myself right now.  I have started the process of implementing exercise back into my busy life. I know it isn't 7am in the morning but I guarentee I will work my way to it. It is currently the end of Day #4 and I think I am starting to get into the habit of eating healthy.  Now it is time to work on building an exercise regiment that I can keep to while trying to keep up with my busy work schedule.  I know it has only been four days but I already can feel a difference in my body.  I feel like I have more energy and motivation then I have had in the last few months.

It was a very long day at work today, as matter of fact it has been a very busy last four years of work. As I mentioned before in a previous post it is hard to find the time to take an hour out of my day to workout. During my 30 min walk tonight through the streets of my town, I noticed that my Fiancee had a very large smile on her face. I asked her why she was smiling and she had a very interesting answer. She told me that she liked walking with me because it took my mind off of work and it was a great way to spend time with me while we were both working out. I totally agree with her and I am determined to make more time after work to have more of those walks.

With that being said let's get to the details of the day.

Meals of the Day

Breakfast - Scrambled egg whites on whole wheat bread with fresh mixed fruit salad and water
Lunch - Tuna with a single piece of american cheese on whole wheat bread with lettuce, a side of baked potato chips, apple slices, and a bottle of water (All from Subway)
Dinner - Chicken BLT Salad with fat free french salad dressing, a side of croutons, and a bottle of water (All from Wendy's)

I drank plenty of water today and took all of my vitamins from GNC

Daily Exercise

Once again I attempted  to wake up at 7am this morning and struggled to do so. I did however go for a 30 minute walk today.  I am planning on putting together a weekly exercise plan this weekend. I will keep everyone updated.

Day #4 Weigh-In - 299 lbs

Day #3

What is up everyone!! Today is Day #3 and I am feeling motivated and full of energy.

I will admit that I had my first official struggle this morning. I said yesterday that I was going to attempt to get in the habit of waking up at 7am to do my cardio workout. Believe me when I say that I had every intention on getting up to do so. However, I slept through my alarm and supposedly my fiancee tried to wake me up.  In her words, I rolled over and went right back to sleep.

I remember someone telling me once that in life you will make mistakes and there will be bumps in the road but it is up to you to learn from them and not let them stop you from completing your goal. I will not let this little bump in the mission get me down. I am still going to set my alarm for 7am and give it another try tomorrow.

449 days is plenty of time to get things right.

With that being said let's get to the details of the day:

Meals of the Day

Breakfast - Scrambled egg whites on whole wheat bread with a side of fresh mixed fruit and a bottle of water
Lunch - Tuna on honey oat bread with a slice of american cheese and lettuce from Subway. I also had a side of baked potato chips with a bottle of water
Dinner - Half a chicken ceasar salad with half an italian sandwich from Panera and a bottle of water

I also took all of my vitamins that I purchased form GNC.

Exercise Plan

I am going give a second attempt at trying to develop a habit of waking up at 7:00am every morning to do my daily cardio routine starting tomorrow. I will keep everyone updated on how it goes.

Day #2

It was very hard getting out of bed this morning. The long Memorial Day weekend had taken its toll on my body. By the way, congrats to my cousin for getting married this weekend.  I wish nothing but the best for you and your wife, love you!!

Anyway, the last thing I wanted to do this morning was get up and go to work. While I was attempting to roll out of bed, I remembered that today was Day #2 of the mission and suddenly I had the energy to get up, jump in the shower, and start my day.

While driving to work this morning, I reminded myself that I am  not the only person in the world that goes through the weight struggles that I have encountered over the last few years. I believe that realizing this has made my commitment to this mission even more important not only for me but for everyone who is working for the same goal that I am.

With that being said, it is time to get down to the details of today:

Meals of the Day

Breakfast - Scrambled egg whites on whole wheat toast with a side of mixed fresh fruit
Early Afternoon Meal - Tuna on honey oat bread with a slice of american cheese and lettuce.
Late Afternoon Meal - Fresh cut deli turkey on a roll with lettuce and american cheese with a side of baked potato chips
Dinner - Baked chicken, steamed broccoli, and a side of steamed brown rice. I also had a small glass of diet soda with dinner.

I drank nothing but water today and took all of my vitamins.

*Meal Preparation Tip - Plan out all of your meals for the week on Sunday and food shop accordingly. Preparing your meals this way will get you into a habit of sticking to a healthy mapped out nutritional plan. It will also decrease your chances of improving your meal selections.

Exercise Plan

I am going to attempt to develop a habit of waking up at 7:00am every morning to do my daily cardio routine starting tomorrow. I heard a rumor that conducting your cardio workout in the morning helps to boost your metabolism for the day thus making your body burn calories better which leads to fat loss. I will keep everyone updated on how this task goes.

Day #2 Weight  - 301.8

Day #1 Part B

Hello Everyone.

The time has come to start this mission I have been planning for.  It will be hard, it will be demanding, and it will take every once of will power to stay on course. But one thing is for certain there is no turning back and I will not quit!!

With that being said, Day #1 is today and "The Mission to Healthy" has officially started.

I will be executing this weight loss program by eating correctly, exercising everyday, and taking vitamins (Vitamin C, Flax Seed Oil, CoQ-10, B-12 dissolving pill, and Mega Man Sport Multivitamin) that I purchased from GNC.

Please feel free to comment, ask any questions, or give advice on any of my blog posts. I promise I will try to answer everything to the best of my ability. I am not only trying to better my health but I am trying to better the health of everyone who struggles to loose weight. I do not know everything there is to know about weight loss, but I will find a way to do it the right.

The goal is to help as many people as possible, so tell all your friends to come follow my blog (http://www.theheavymansdiary.blogspot.com/) and to also follow me on Twitter (TheHeavyMan).

Introducing The Heavy Man

Hello.  For the purpose of this mission, you can call me The Heavy Man.

I have had issues controlling my weight for a good portion of my life. I used to have no problems staying in shape back in High School because I had sports and gym class to keep me exercising.  It wasn't until college hit that it all went down hill. Being on your own and having the freedom to eat and do what you want can take a pretty big toll on your body.

When college ended, I had a great job that kind of fell right into my lap.  This job entails traveling all over the country and running televised sporting events. If anyone has ever traveled before, on a constant basis, you know that it is hard as hell to maitain a good eating and workout regiment. Anyway, needless to say, I gained weight and fell even more out of shape then I ever was.

Struggling to regain my health, I had a run in with my first ever reality check.  My uncle passed away due to complications that were related to being over weight. My whole family was in shock over the news because he was the one person in my family who knew how to pull everyone together in times of need. I will never forget the way we all felt at his funeral. It looked like the air had been sucked from everyone's body and we were all struggling to breath. It felt like I had lost my own father. I had vowed from that point on to loose weight and to get back into shape and I did!! However, the weight loss did not last for long. I had lost the weight and gained it all back, plus a few more pounds.  I was not educated enough to understand how to maintain the weight loss.

That brings me to the present time. I am over weight, out of shape, and struggling to keep what ever piece of health I have left from slipping away.  It is not a good feeling knowing that you are slowly killing yourself. I just had my second reality check a few weeks ago. I had gotten into a little argument with my mother over the way I was eating and disregarding my health and she was right. She had called me up in tears and I will never forget the words she had said to me that night, "I don't want you to die." That my friends will break your heart into a million pieces hearing your mother say that. After I got off the phone with her, I thought to myself, "I don't want to die either." What the hell did I get myself into? I had suddenly remembered everything that I wanted to do with my life: I want to get married, have kids, start a family, grow old and watch my grandchildren come into this world. I am not ready to check out yet!!

So, here is the deal. I am developing this mission not only for me but for everyone who struggles with the same weight issues as I do. I want to show the world that you can do anything if you put your mind to it. I am hoping to inspire myself, as well as others. Please help me to keep on track and I will do the same for anyone else who wants to try. I am going to embark on a weight loss program on Monday, May 31, 2010 that will last until my wedding day (Friday, August 26, 2011). I will record my struggles and accomplishments every single day for the next 452 days. This will be the hardest thing I will ever do in my life. I do not know where this road will take me but I am determined to make it work.

This is the Heavy Man's Diary and I am on a mission to get healthy. The count down to the goal date starts tomorrow!!
