My Story

On Monday, May 31, 2010, I embarked on a mission to lose weight and to get into the best shape of my life for my wedding. For a long time that mission was a success until life started getting stressful and food became a way to cope with that stress. To make a long story short, the mission fell short before my wedding day was here. And to make things even worse, I stopped eating healthy, exercising, and blogging for over two years. I now have a very beautiful wife and baby boy but my health is still crap. So to turn things around, I am brining back "The Heavy Man" and the "Mission to Healthy."

Day #117 - A Reminder of How Far I Have Come

Why can't losing and then maintaining the lost weight ever be easy? The last few months have definitely been an up and down adventure. Since the start of my "Mission to Healthy" I have seen good days and not so good days. But the end result, is that main goal, I am shooting to accomplish. I have mentioned it before a few times, that I have had weight issues for my entire adult life. And I have come to the conclusion that I will have to be aware of this issue for the rest of my life. I can honestly say, after what I have already been through, that I really don't mind having to face this problem for the rest of my life. I have realized by dealing with my weight issues, it has turned me into a much better person. Before my mission, I really didn't give a crap about my health. I ate because it helped me escape from the stresses I had at work and in life. I used food as a means to make myself mentally feel better. I know it sounds weird, but that is what I did. And before I could do anything to help myself out, I was falling deeper out of control.

My physical shape was so bad, that I really didn't want to move or do any activity because I had trouble breathing and I would get pains in my chest. I would constantly wake up in the middle of the night choking and I actually had thrown up a couple of times because of it. I would actually go to bed fearing that I would have a heart attack in the middle of the night. It wasn't until I received a wake up call from my mother, that I started to get my act together. From that point on, I made a promise to myself to better my health as well as my life in the process. That is how my "Mission to Healthy" was born.

Soon after I started the mission, I could see results. And of course being able to see those results gave me some motivation to keep on going. After a few days, I started to receive comments and words of encouragement from not only my family but my friends as well. I then started to receive tips and advice from people I never met before. And that actually left me speechless. Here were these people who never met me before but were so kind to lend a helping hand. Days turned into weeks and weeks started to turn into months. The weight was continuing to come off and I started to feel like an actual person once again.

I believe that lessons I have been learning along the way and the healthy habits I have been building upon, have really helped to make me a better person. And by going through this transformation, I have learned the importance of being responsible, not only with my health but with my life as well. It has gotten to a point were eating healthy, exercising, and writing this blog has become second nature. Each of these important parts had become a part of my every day life. Of course, I have learned that taking care of my own health is important. But also being a shoulder to lean on, for everyone who is struggling with these same issues as I am, has become very important to me as well. I am thankful for where this mission has taken me so far, but it is not done for me yet at all.

I appreciate you all letting me speak from my heart tonight. A lot of this stuff that I mentioned in this post, I have shared with you before, on numerous accounts. I just like to remind myself where I was and how far I have traveled to get to where I am today. I am very thankful for getting a second chance at changing my health and my life around.

With that being said, let's get to the details of the day:

Day #116 - An Uphill Challenge

The work day went by extremely slowly, however it was very productive. Usually when I have a very productive day, it seems to go by quicker then usual. Maybe it is was all of the phone calls that I was receiving today or maybe it was the 1 1/2 hour training session that helped me learn how to use the ticketing system for my event in Charleston. Well whatever it was, the day went by extremely slowly. But thank goodness I managed to get a lot done. Anyway, the one thing that did keep me going today was thinking about what back streets I was going to take while running tonight.

I mentioned in my post, two days ago, that I attempted to go running outside for the first time in a while because my gym key wasn't working properly, thus not allowing me to enter the gym that I workout at. But I think this little mishap led to the decision of me, The Heavy Man, trying to incorporate more days of running outside as the new cardio portion of my workout routine. When I attempted this the other night, my knees and shins ended up being sore shortly after I was done running. However, tonight's results were not as bad.

As soon as I got home from work, I put my things down, kissed Patty good bye, and was out the door ready to try and do this running outside thing again for the second straight cardio day. As I started down the street everything was feeling ok. My legs were feeling a little stiff from the other day but were quickly loosening up by the time I reached the end of the street. Once at the end of my street, I figure I would take a left and go in the opposite direction I did the other night. For those of you who don't know the Essex County area, the road I turned to run down is pretty long and I was determined to run to the end and make my way back. While running down that road, I noticed that it was pretty dark and it was also hard to see all of the cracks and bumps in the sidewalk pavement. So, with the fear of tripping and making a fool of myself, I kept my eyes towards the ground looking up occasionally.

Running the entire length of the road was surprisingly, not that bad, and I had made it to the end without stopping once. I actually looked down at the stop watch on my IPOD and it said I had gone for 15 minutes.  I was feeling great but as I turned to cross the road to go back the way I came, I suddenly realized something that made me take a deep breath. The reason I was feeling great after the first 15 minutes was because I ran the entire road, down hill. I was so busy concentrating on not tripping over the bumps in the sidewalk, in the dark, that I didn't even realize that I was running down hill. Now don't get me wrong, it wasn't a steep slope but you could definitely see the difference running back up the street as opposed to running down the street, the way I came. So as I stood there catching my breath and gathering the energy I needed to get back to my apartment, a thought popped into my mind. I guess that is the beauty of running outside without an easy way of getting back to where you started. No matter what, you have to challenge yourself to get home, even if it means running up a long hill to do so. After all was said and done, I made back to the apartment in one piece, about 35 minutes later from the time I started my workout. I gotta admit, I do like running outside and switching up the routine. Hopefully it is working!

With that being said, let's get to the details of the day:

Meals of the Day (The Heavy Man - 37 Points)
(I am currently following the Weight Watchers Points System)

Breakfast - 2 Eggo nutrigrain waffles with a cup of Light'n Fit yogurt and a serving of strawberries and brown sugar = Points 5
Snack During the Day - 1 Weight Watchers brownie, 2 pears, and 1 Weight Watchers carrot cake = Points 5
Early Afternoon - 1 serving of homemade Beef Stroganoff (Weight Watchers Recipe) = Points 9
Late Afternoon  - 1 Boca Veggie Burger on Weight Watchers flat rye bread and a serving of baked Tostitos with mango salsa = Points 5
Dinner - 1 serving of homemade Chicken Cordon Bleu (Weight Watchers Recipe) with a side of 99% fat free eggo noodles and a serving of peas = Points 11
Dessert - 1 Weight Watchers ice cream bar = Points 3

Total Points Eaten Today = 38 Points (1 point over my daily limit)

Exercise

Today I ran outside for the second cardio workout day in a row. Tomorrow I will be executing the weight lifting and strength training portion of my workout routine.

Day #116 - Weigh-In = 250.2 lbs (This is an example of the day by day weight fluctuation at its best. Yesterday I weighed in at 249.8 lbs and today I am at 250.2 lbs. I will be weighing comfortably in the 240's very soon, I can guarantee that)

Day #115 - More Outside Cardio / Reaching Another Goal

Thank you to everyone who had commented on yesterday's post. I ran outside last night for the first time in a while and I somewhat enjoyed it. It was great to get outside and see different scenery. As many of you all know, I usually execute my cardio routines inside at my gym. I think they are effective but it is the same old thing, day in and day out. I spend 40 minutes switching between levels on the elliptical and it does get awful boring. And because of it being boring, I find myself counting down the minutes until it is over and that makes it feel like an eternity. However, while running outside last night, I was distracted by my surroundings and before I knew it, I had ran for 30 mins straight! The only negative thing about the whole experience was that my knees and shins were sore afterward. So I decided to take the question of whether or not I should be executing my cardio workouts outside more, to all of you. And I managed to get a pretty good response that directed me towards running outside more. I believe that I should be running outside more as well.

Reaching Another Goal

I mentioned a few days ago that I love setting small personal goals for myself pertaining to the mission. This strategy helps to give me confidence while trying to reach my goals. And once I achieve a goal, I am motivated to accomplish the next one. So, to bring everyone who is new to the blog up to speed, a few days ago I reached the 50 lbs lost mark for my mission. And of course, that was one of the personal goals I set for myself to achieve at the start of this mission. So with that goal out of the way, I had to think of a new one to push towards. I came up with trying to break through into the 240's as my new goal. With this new goal established, you can only imagine how excited I was to see that I weighed in at 249.8 lbs this morning! Now I don't want to jump the gun and say I have completely broken into the 240's and I won't be weighing in at 250 lbs anymore. It just isn't that easy, unfortunately. I have learned by now that the human body can fluctuate up to 5 lbs a day. I also want to throw out there, that I lifted weights today as well. So I don't want to automatically say that I will be in the 240's tomorrow but weighing in at 249.8 lbs this morning was a good start in the right direction.

Once I officially break into the 240's on a consistent basis, I think my next goal will be to cut those 10 lbs between 250 and 240 in half. I am officially stating for the record, that once I am comfortably into the 240's on a consistent basis, my next goal will be to reach 245 lbs. I think that is a very reasonable goal that can be achieved within the next 1-2 weeks with enough hard work and determination.

With that being said, let's get to the details of the day:

Meals of the Day (The Heavy Man - 37 Points) - Since I weighed in this morning at 249.8 lbs, this means that I drop another point off of my daily points limit.
(I an currently following the Weight Watchers Points System)

Breakfast - Egg whites on a multigrain roll with a slice of american cheese = Points 7
Snacks During the Day - 1 Weight Watchers brownie = Points 2
Lunch - 1 foot long Chicken Teriyaki sub on whole wheat bread with 2 slices of american cheese with a side of baked potato chips and apple slices (Subway) = Points 18
Dinner - 1 reduced fat crescent roll and a serving of homemade Beef Stroganoff (Weight Watchers Recipe) = Points 10
Dessert - 1 Weight Watchers ice cream cone = Points 2

Total Points Eaten Today = 39 Points (2 points over my new daily limit)

Exercise

Today I executed the weight lifting and strength training portion of my workout routine: Incline Dumbbell Press, Rear Delt Fly (Neutral Grip), and Alternating Bicep Curls (4 sets of each x 15 reps each), Lat Pull Down (Palms Up), Shoulder Dumbbell Press, and Side Lunges (4 sets of each x 15 reps each), Cable Flyes, Seated Row with Straight Bar, and Stability Ball Squats (4 sets of each x 15 reps each), and Cable Chops, Dumbbell Skull Crushers, and Side Dumbbell Bends (4 sets of each x 15 reps each). Tomorrow I will be doing cardio (running outside).

Day #114 - Taking my Cardio Routine to the Streets

I arrived home from work today fully anticipating to jump into a great cardio workout tonight at the gym. I made sure that I ate a nice healthy dinner and waited a good hour before I left to go workout. But as I walked up to the main door of the gym and swiped my pass key, nothing happened. The little red light that normally turns green, when the door unlocks, stayed red. Even the noise the lock makes when the door unlocks didn't happen. I actually just paid my monthly fee, so I really didn't know why it wasn't working. I immediately jumped into panic mode with the fear of not being able to workout tonight. Wow..... I even amazed myself, I have really come a long way in this mission, if I started panicking over not being able to workout. In the past I would of turned around and gone straight home to probably sit down on the couch and watch TV while eating something crappy. Anyway, as I was trying to figure out a way to open the door, I suddenly remembered that it was my cardio day and I could simply get in the car, park it at home, and take my cardio routine to the streets tonight.

Now if any of you remember the last time I attempted to run outside, it didn't turn out so well. All I can remember from that day is being able to run for 15 mins, being short of breath, and having sore knees for the rest of the night. I also remember saying to myself, how I wanted to start running outside at least once a week and obviously that did not come to be. So, you can only imagine the hesitation I had towards having the opportunity to run outside again tonight. On the other hand if I chose not to run outside, that would have ruined my chances of getting in a workout. And of course I didn't want that to happen.

In the first few minutes into my run, I noticed that I wasn't having trouble breathing at all. I was absolutely amazed at that and of course proud of myself for being able to get to that point in the mission. However, I did within those first few minutes have a little pain in my knees as well as my shins. I couldn't really tell if my legs were a little stiff and they needed to be loosened up. I did stretch before I started to run but it has been awhile since I ran outside last. So taking that into consideration, I decided to keep on going. It was actually a nice change of pace, running outside. It does sometimes get boring running inside on a machine for 40 mins, which is why I think I enjoyed running outside tonight. I actually enjoyed it so much that before I knew it, I had ran for 30 mins. That my friends, is a new best for The Heavy Man!

It took a while but my legs did warm up a little and I noticed that they weren't in as much pain as they were the last time I ran outside. They did still feel sore at the end of the workout though. I wonder if it is my shoes or maybe my body wasn't built to do cardio outside. I do however want to continue to build on being able to run outside on a more consistent basis because I do enjoy actually being able to see different places as I workout. What do all think? Should I keep on trying to build the strength in my legs and joints to be able to run outside one day with no pain? Or should I stick to doing cardio on machines in the gym? Please let me know what you think.

With that being said, let's get to the details of the day:

Meals of the Day (The Heavy Man - 38 Points)
(I am currently following the Weight Watchers Points System)

Breakfast - Egg whites on a multigrain roll with a slice of american cheese = Points 7
Snacks During the Day - 1 Weight Watcher brownie = Points 2
Lunch - 1/2 rotisserie chicken with a side of steamed vegetables and cinnamon apples (Boston Market) = Points 20
Dinner - 1 serving of whole wheat pasta with parmesan cheese and a side of 3 reduced fat crescent rolls = Points 7
Dessert - 1 Weight Watchers ice cream cone = Points 2

Total Points Eaten Today = 38 Points

Exercise

I was locked out of the gym tonight because my pass key stopped working. So, I improvised and did my cardio outside for roughly 40 mins. Tomorrow I will be executing my weight lifting and strength training portion of my workout routine.

Day #113- Working Hard to Make the Impossible, Possible

I think it is absolutely amazing how the human body can go from feeling so crappy after eating some unhealthy foods one day, to feeling great the next by eating all healthy foods. It is interesting for me to think about because it is not like I ate crappy the entire day yesterday. I had a few unhealthy things for brunch and a cheese burger for a late lunch. Other then that, I ate healthy for the rest of the night. But those few things, I had yesterday morning, gave me a stomachache for most of the day, leading into the night time. Those few unhealthy things, I believe, also had something to do with my weight fluctuation as well this morning. After being in the 250's for the last few days, I weighed in this morning at 251. I am not complaining about the 0.6 of a pound weight gain, I just think it is amazing how every little thing can affect the outcome of how a person weighs from one day to the other.

The good thing is that I did not let my "Cheat Day Hangover" or the fact that I went up a little in weight this morning, get me down. I have learned from executing my mission, the last few months, that these ups and downs are a normal part of life as well as the weight loss process. I went into today fully understanding that it was a new week and that I have determined a new goal for myself to reach. I mentioned a few days ago in one of my posts, that my new goal is to break through into the 240's. I honestly can't even remember when the last time I weighed in the 240's was. This mission, some times, feels like a dream and my wedding day is the goal that I am constantly trying to get to. I knew coming into this mission that it was going to be a long journey that will definitely be the hardest thing I ever had to do.

However, over the span of these last few months I have learned to be patient, to let the weight loss process take its natural course, and to visualize what my end result will be and feel like. As simple as it may sound, I want to be able to run in a marathon one day, I want to be able to do 100 push ups in one set, and I want to be in such great shape that I might be able to dunk a basketball. I want to be able to make the impossible for me, become possible. I don't think anything is to small or to big to visualize because I know I will keep working hard to make anything possible eventually.

With that being said, let's get to the details of the day:

Meals of the Day (The Heavy Man - 38 Points)
(I am currently following the Weight Watchers Points System)

Breakfast - 2 Eggo nutrigrain waffles with a serving of Light'n Fit yogurt and a serving of strawberries with brown sugar = Points 5

Dinner - 2 grilled cheese sandwiches (All Weight Watchers Ingredients) with a serving of baked potato chips and a pear = Points 8
Dessert - 1 Weight Watchers ice cream cone = Points 2

Total Points Eaten Today = 35 Points (3 points under my daily limit)

Body Measurements

Day #112 - The Wedding Planning Starts to Pick Up

Today was a very important day in the planning for mine and Patty's wedding. Today was the day that Patty tried on her wedding dress for the all ladies that will be involved with the wedding as well as trying to figure out what the bridesmaid dresses will look like. She had been nervous the entire week leading up today because she really wanted my mother to like the way it looked on her. So in the good spirit of sticking to tradition, I was not allowed to participant in today's event. Instead I was volunteered for babysitting duty. I had the job of entertaining my future nieces and nephews while the ladies did their thing. So we decided what better way to keep the children busy then go to the park. It was also great for me too because I like to take a day during the week, preferably Sunday, to get away from the diet and eat some food that I would not normally eat. I have mentioned a few times in the past, eating some unhealthy food one day a week helps me to control my junk food cravings. Anyway, the park was perfect because I got to run around with the kids for an hour or two.

Once the ladies were done, I met up with them at one of our favorite restaurants across the street from our apartment. I could immediately tell that they all had a good time trying on dresses and talking about wedding planning. I especially noticed that Patty was very excited at how the dress appointment turned out. She also said that she got the reaction she had hoped to get. It turns out that once my mother saw her in the wedding dress, she started to cry those happy tears only a proud parent can do. My mother had told her that the dress was perfect! I think that is absolutely awesome!! Patty was happy, her mother was happy, and my mother was happy. I think that is a winning combination.

I did however, go a little over board with the unhealthy food choices today. I was excited for Patty with how everything turned out today. So I decided that I would eat a little more unhealthy foods then I would normally eat on a day such as today. And I think I am paying for it now. Even when I went to the gym tonight to workout out, the food that I ate felt like a rock sitting in my stomach. The day turned out great but I can't wait to jump back into the mission both eating healthy and exercising again tomorrow.

With that being said, let's get to the details of the day:

Meals of the Day (The Heavy Man - 38 Points)
(I am currently following the Weight Watchers Recipe)

* Today is what I am going to refer to from now on as a "Cheat Day." Over the past few months I have decided that in order to overcome my cravings for unhealthy food, I will take one day out of the week to feed those cravings. This accomplishes 2 things: First, it controls my cravings for the week and second, it actually gives me a stomachache. And that stomachache more often then none, reminds of how my body used to feel when I ate crappy on an every day basis. That feeling also makes me want to jump right back into the mission because I refuse to ever be that way again. During my cheat days I will attempt to only eat one bad meal, however there will be days like today were I will eat a little more then usual. I will also record what I eat but not keep track of my Weight Watchers Points because the points will be higher then my daily limit anyway.

Early Afternoon - I ate at a brunch buffet this morning with Patty's family. I had eggs, bacon, a mini waffle, some mac n cheese, some french bread and a few chocolate chip cookies.
Mid Afternoon - I ate with Patty's family as well as with my mother, grandmother, and Aunt. I had a cheese burger with american cheese on a roll and a side of sweet potato fries.
Late Afternoon - I had a serving of homemade chicken pot pie (Weight Watchers Recipe)
Dinner - I had 2 grilled cheese sandwiches (All with Weight Watchers Ingredients) and a serving of baked potato chips
Dessert - 1 Weight Watchers ice cream cone
Snacks During the Day - 1 pear and 2 Weight Watchers brownies

Exercise

Today I ran for 30 mins on the elliptical machine at different resistance levels. Tomorrow I will be getting back into the swing of things with executing the weight lifting and strength training portion of my workout routine.

Day #111 - My First Blog Award!! / My Next Goal is in Sight

After I woke up this morning, I made my way to the scale like I do every morning. And to my surprise, I received another exciting result! I will get into that result in a little bit. After I was done weighing in, I decided to go straight to my computer to see if I had received any comments on yesterday's post. As soon as I signed into the blog site, I was notified that I had 1 comment. It turns out that the comment was from my new friend, Patrick. Patrick has his own blog as well called, Responsibility 199 and in this blog he explains how getting himself to 199 lbs or lower is a belief, need, mission, and commitment to himself. He can definitely explain better, please take a few minutes to visit his blog when you have chance. It is put together very well and I think you all would enjoy reading it. He is currently embarking on his own mission to become a healthier person and I congratulate him on the progress he has had so far. Please show him the same support that you all have been kind enough to show me over the past few months. Thank you!

Anyway, I found out this morning that Patrick had presented me with a blog award. When I read this, I was taken back because it was the first award I have ever received for my blog. I want to thank Patrick for this honor and of course, I would like to thank all of you as well because with out the support I have received, I don't think I would had made it this far! Now, I have to follow a few rules in order to complete the process of being presented this award.

1. Answer the question, "If you had one chance to go back and change one thing in your life, would you and what would it be?

I have had a pretty good life so far,  if I do say so myself (Knock on Wood!). But I do have an answer in reply to this question. I would definitely go back and change one thing in my life. I mentioned at the beginning of my mission that I tried doing Weight Watchers when I was in college. I stopped after a few short weeks because I wanted to party with all of my friends. I wish I could have seen back then what I took the time to learn now. I spent a lot of years being over weight and I had to suffer through them all. I do wish I could have taken the time, back then, to get myself healthier. I say this because I am now 27 and it has taken this long to understand that I was slowly killing myself, for years. However, I have learned from my past failures and I have used it to fuel my mission. I will never go back to being physically that way ever again.

2. Pass on to six people and inform them of the award.

I would be glad to do this step. The following people are who I would like to pass this award onto:
1. Maggie - I'm Losing It
2. Traveler - Trek to 99 Kilos
3. Just Me - Have you Gained Weight
4. Healthy Loser Gal
5. Alan - The Pounds Off Playoff
6. Vinny - The Fat to Fit Diary

My Next Goal is in Sight

I mentioned earlier in this post, that I received a nice surprise this morning when I stepped up on the scale. This morning I weighed in at 250.6 lbs! You know what this means...... I am one step closer to breaking into the 240's!! A few days ago, I reached 50 lbs lost for my mission. I also mentioned to you all, how that was one of my main goals so far for my mission, to reach that mark. And now that I have reached it, I think my next goal is breaking into the 240's. I know it is such short notice announcing this goal, but now that it is realistically right in front of me, I want to reach it really bad. Let's go Heavy Man, it is time to step it up a notch!

With that being said, let's get to the details of the day:

Meals of the Day (The Heavy Man - 38 Points)
(I am currently following the Weight Watchers Points System)

Early Afternoon (I slept in late today) - Grilled Chicken Sandwich and a 5 piece chicken nugget (Wendy's) = Points 13
Snacks During the Course of the Day - 1 pear and 1 Weight Watchers Brownie = Points 3
Later Afternoon - 2 slices of Weight Watchers whole wheat bread with 2 slices of Weight Watchers american cheese with a serving of baked potato chips = Points 5

Exercise

I did not make it to the gym today. Patty and I spent the entire day running around food shopping, running errands, cleaning our entire apartment, washing all of our laundry, and cleaning out our entire apartment storage space. My knees and legs hurt from walking up and down my apartment stairs all day. I mentioned before that I like to take 1 day off from the gym a week and today was that day. Tomorrow I will be doing cardio at the gym.
