My Story

On Monday, May 31, 2010, I embarked on a mission to lose weight and to get into the best shape of my life for my wedding. For a long time that mission was a success until life started getting stressful and food became a way to cope with that stress. To make a long story short, the mission fell short before my wedding day was here. And to make things even worse, I stopped eating healthy, exercising, and blogging for over two years. I now have a very beautiful wife and baby boy but my health is still crap. So to turn things around, I am brining back "The Heavy Man" and the "Mission to Healthy."

Day #41 - Old Friends and New Tricks

Today was a very nice day. I have been working and traveling so much lately, that I really hadn't had the time to sleep in or relax. So today was the first day in a while that I left myself sleep in late and focused on relaxing and enjoying myself. Not only did a I relax but I also was able to hang out with old friends that I have known since college. My buddy and his wife took an hour trip up north today to come and visit myself, my fiancee, and my sister. I have known him for a while and he was actually the person who taught me how to develop and maintain a blog. He too, writes his own blog and the name of it is "The Brew-Thusiast." If you enjoy learning about and drinking all different kinds of beer, then he would be the person to follow. Check it out when you have a free moment.

Anyway, getting back to the point. My buddy, has also struggled with weight issues for a good part of his life. However, over the last two years he had decided to embark on a mission himself to lose the weight and to get healthy. He was over 300 lbs when he started his weight loss program and now he is currently around 215 lbs. He his one of my inspirations for my mission. I have a photograph of him and myself when we were both heavy together. I keep it as a constant reminder of the journey he went through to get to his goal. He has managed to lose the weight and keep it off for two years now. I can only hope that I will accomplish the same thing and reach my goal just like he had reached his.

During the course of the day, we had ended up going to a restaurant called, "Cosi" for dinner. Cosi is great because they offer fairly healthy food that tastes amazing. It is a great place to grab lunch or dinner. Anyway, as we walked into Cosi, I was trying to look up on the Weight Watchers website what the points system was for their meals. To my surprise, it was not in the points system, which wasn't really a problem because I could have easily looked up the ingredients individually in the Weight Watchers book and figured it out myself. My buddy noticed me trying to put the points together and he told me that he could make it really easy for me to find the points value without having to search in the books. Intrigued by what he said, I invited him to let me in on the secret. He had directed me to a website called, "Dotti's Weight Loss Zone" that his wife had found for him when he first started the Weight Watchers program 2 years ago. Let me tell you what, this website is amazing!! It turns out that Dotti is an average person just like you and me who decided to make a healthy change in her life about 12 years ago. Since October of 1998, she has lost a total of 105 lbs and guess how she did it? She followed the Weight Watchers program. Anyway, over the last 12 years she had been compiling so much information, that she created a website that has Weight Watchers points for almost every major food chain and restaurant. She has places on her website that even Weight Watchers doesn't have on theirs. I thought this was the most amazing thing in the world. I had learned a new trick today. So, if you are currently following the Weight Watchers program (I am not saying that you have to) and you are having trouble finding point values for a restaurant you would like to go to, look up "Dotti's Weight Loss Zone" and I am pretty sure she will have what you are looking for.

With that being said, let's get to the details of the day:

Meals of the Day (The Heavy Man = 40 Points)
(I am currently following the Weight Watchers Points System)

Breakfast - 3 egg whites on 2 slices of Weight Watchers Whole Wheat Bread with a slice of fat free american cheese = 3 Points
Snack - 2 rice cakes & a Weight Watchers Ice Cream Bar = Points 5
Lunch - 2 Boca Veggie Burgers on 2 slices of Weight Watchers Whole Wheat Bread, 2 slices of fat free american cheese, and a serving of sweet potato fries = Points 10
Dinner - Chicken BMT Sandwich and A side of Kettle Cooked Potato Chips from Cosi = Points 24

Total Points Eaten Today = 42 Points (2 points over my limit)

Exercise

I woke this morning at 10am and went to the gym first thing. At the gym, I actually did a cardio workout for 30 mins. I had to make it quick because I had to go food shopping before my buddy came up for the day. Tomorrow, I will be doing my lower body workout.

  1. Double check a lot of the points on Dotti's - when I did WW, it was all really outdated (low balling point values).

The best thing to do is look up each individual restaurant and get the nutritional info from there.

Keep up the good work! So proud of you!
